Therapeutic Groups

Therapeutic Groups

You might prefer to engage as part of a therapeutic group, rather than attending counselling as an individual.

Group therapy involves people meeting with a trained therapist to talk about challenges, to share experiences and to give each other support. Groups offer a private space to explore thoughts and feelings, understand behaviours, and to get feedback from the practitioner and other group members in a structured, protected space.

Group members connect with each other by talking about similar difficulties, and this builds a sense of community, trust and understanding.

Therapeutic groups promote personal growth by tackling mental health concerns together. Benefits include:

  • less isolation and loneliness

  • finding a sense of safety and trust from group belonging

  • sharing experiences and different views

  • learning how others cope with similar issues

  • developing social skills

  • feelings are validated and normalised

  • there is less personal stigma

  • shared progress is validated

Ethical principles make sure the environment is respectful and confidential. Therapeutic groups are instrumental in supporting mental and emotional health. Group therapy provides a supportive setting for expressing emotions and examining behaviours, while interacting with peers encourages emotional well-being, trust and openness.

Therapy
Therapeutic Bereavement Group

Our bereavement group caters specifically to persons who have lost a loved one, and who feel ready to work through their grief towards reaching a 'new normal'. Grief can feel isolating, but you don’t have to face it alone. Our bereavement support groups offer a safe space to connect with others who understand loss.

Addressing Grief and Loss together

Guided by our qualified counsellor, these groups encourage sharing your personal story, learning and exploring ways to navigate life after loss. Our program values every unique grief journey and focuses on mutual support. Groups are held separately from one-on-one therapy. This closed group environment supports participants' health and wellbeing by creating a safe space to share experiences and coping strategies.

Join a Group

Persons wishing to participate will be invited to attend an initial session with the facilitator, to ensure that each group can support the individual needs of all participants. After this first session, participants are invited to meet weekly for eight consecutive weeks at our clinic, or online.

Our 8-week course covers the following topics:

  • Grief and grieving styles

  • Your story

  • Difficult thoughts and feelings

  • Coping in the storm

  • Continuing bonds

  • Meaning making

  • Self-care and self-kindness

  • Legacy, rituals and remembering
