The Shadow Self - conquer or befriend?

I've had recent conversations with peers about "overcoming" personal stumbling blocks. This raised the notion that in fact, we should stop trying to "overcome" our 'shadow self'. In psychological terms, the shadow is composed of the parts of ourselves we’ve repressed, denied, or deemed unacceptable—like anger, fierce ambition, or even hidden creative gifts.
When we try to "conquer" or defeat the shadow, we only push it deeper into the dark. That’s usually when it leaks out as sudden outbursts, self-sabotage, or harsh judgments toward others.
The goal isn't to eliminate it. The goal is shadow integration—bringing these hidden aspects into conscious awareness so you can harness their energy constructively.

Where to start?
1. Spot your projections: Notice what irrationally infuriates or triggers you in others. It’s often a mirror of your own disowned traits.
2. Practice radical curiosity: Turn off the internal judge and look at your hidden behaviours with self-compassion instead of shame.
3. Reclaim your "golden shadow": Realize that your personal power, boundaries, and rawest talents might be locked away in your shadow because you were once taught it wasn't safe to show them.
True leadership and personal growth don't come from being flawless; they come from being whole.
Have you ever noticed a major personal breakthrough after finally facing a trait you used to dislike in yourself? Let me know your thoughts?👇
